5 Things You May Not Know About YÀN's Mooncakes

Mid-Autumn is a special time for loved ones to come together to observe the brilliance of the full moon. At the heart of this celebration, mooncakes are served as timeless symbols of reunion and tradition. YÀN’s exquisite mooncake selection encapsulates the spirit of this joyous occasion and makes it the perfect choice for gifting, or for one’s indulgence.

While this festival is a time for cherished moments and mooncake traditions, YÀN’s mooncakes offer a contemporary twist on this classic treat. Here are 5 things you may not know about the Cantonese restaurant’s Mid-Autumn offerings this year:

  1.  The Thousand Layer Yam with Single Yolk is YÀN’s most popular mooncake, and it is also a flavour that returns every year. These meticulously handmade treats boast a perfect balance of sweet and savoury, with the richness of the yam paste complemented by the delicate, flaky pastry. It’s a timeless classic that appeals to all generations, making it the ideal gift to share with loved ones.

  2. YÀN introduces two new mooncake flavours this year — the Mini Gin Chocolate Truffle Snow Skin Mooncake and Baked Red Bean Paste and Melon Seeds MooncakeThe Mini Gin Chocolate Truffle Snow Skin Mooncake was created with the renowned Japanese gin brand Roku. Featuring a pink snow skin filled with mildly sweetened lotus chestnut paste, the centre brings a delightful surprise with a Roku gin-infused chocolate truffle; and the Baked Red Bean Paste and Melon Seeds Mooncake is a vegetarian take on the traditional Cantonese-style mooncake. Made without eggs, the mooncake highlights velvety, fragrant red bean paste studded with melon seeds, encased in a golden-brown pastry.

  3. It took 2 months to fine-tune the new mooncake flavours. Crafting Yàn's new mooncake flavours was a labour of love. Dedicated research, meticulous recipe refinement, and a commitment to health-conscious ingredients resulted in these extraordinary treats.

  4. YÀN’s mooncake packaging for this year embodies its commitment to sustainability without compromising luxury. From repurposable chests to eco-friendly paper boxes constructed from recyclable materials, the brand strives to balance environmental responsibility with elegant presentation over the recent years. For this year’s festivities, the mooncakes are housed in individual fuchsia pink boxes, within a soft pink satin drawstring bag. For an eco-friendly touch, the mooncake boxes will be placed in a base without a cover, and the drawstring bag may be reused. Each box boasts a holographic print of YÀN's representative motifs, including their logo, swallows, and a peony.

  5. YÀN recommends elevating the mooncake experience with drink pairings like champagne and pu’er tea. To go with the newly-introduced mooncake flavours, YÀN recommends pairing the Mini Gin Chocolate Truffle Snow Skin Mooncake with champagne given its floral and delicate sweetness. Whereas, pu'er tea, which often has a robust character with hints of earthiness, can create a pleasant contrast with the sweetness of the lotus paste and saltiness of the egg yolks in the Baked White Lotus Paste Mooncake.
